Under Section 55 of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), every business or organization that processes personal information must appoint and register an Information Officer with the Information Regulator.

The Information Officer is responsible for ensuring POPIA and PAIA compliance, managing data protection policies, and responding to data subject requests.
π Registration Steps
- Visit the Information Regulator’s official site.
- Click on βREGISTER HEREβ under the POPIA section.
- Complete the online form with:
- Business name and registration number
- Information Officerβs full name and contact details
- Deputy Information Officer details (if applicable)
- Submit the form and retain your confirmation email.
π When to Register?
Immediately upon processing personal information. Updates must be submitted if the Information Officer changes.
π What Happens Next?
Once registered, your Information Officer must:
- Develop internal POPIA policies
- Ensure staff training and awareness
- Respond to data subject access requests
